Let Me take you down, ’cause I’m going to London Fields

06.29.08 | Comment?

For those who got the title reference and are humming along, here’s Strawberry Fields which is suitably spacey for this lazy Sunday:

Well, I played in a pretty epic cricket game in the idyllic surroundings of London Fields yesterday which some spectators (perhaps somewhat distorted by the sun and beneficial herbs) called the sporting event of the summer. The spectators spanned from surly scenesters to reminiscent Rastafarians to frankly, some out-and-out nutters! That’s what the East is all about though, the full spectrum, kaleidoscope if you will, of life and it’s players.

I was afforded some thinking time whilst out in the field (as the opposition showed us the dictionary definition of an ass-whooping!). As a result of this, I have come to the conclusion that London Fields is the best green space in London, now let me explain why…

First of all, London Fields is eezy-peezy to get to it’s literally right next to London Fields station which you can get to from Liverpool Street and you can get to Liverpool Street from everywhere in the World! Trains aside, Mare Street is a hop, skip and jump from the Fields as well. Mare Street is pretty much on all bus routes in existence, including the play bus and the Venga Bus. Look here if you don’t believe me.

So it’s easy to get to and it’s nice and spacious, so it doesn’t get packed like this…

Packed beach

Why is going to the beach so popular? One of the over-arching benefits has to be that the beach not only affords oneself the opportunity to lie mercilessly in the sun until one is able to do a convincing mimic of Larry the Lobster but then also to, like said Lobster, go thrashing in the sea. Whilst most parks can’t compete with this level of disabandon, London Fields’ re-fitted and re-opened Lido allows exactly that. I popped in to the Lido to check it out and was suitably impressed by what’s on offer.

London Fields Lido

So you’ve tanned up, splashed it up and probably played some suitable park game such as boules or badminton or French cricket. What’s left I hear you ask? What in the breadth of humanity’s locker of indulgences remains? Why only the greatest and most British past-time of them all, boozing. The sheer proximity of “The Pub On The Park” (Martello Street) puts it on my podium of good ideas straight away. Secondly, the easy decor and spacious outside area gives the masses what they want after a long day of loafing in the park.

Pub in the park

PS. Found this review on the Fancyapint.com website and thought it was pretty indicative of the shit that site puts out. It points out that this is a “female-friendly” pub (which I’m sure 99% of the pubs I’ve been to in my life have been) and that “The only thing that lets it down is that with a fantastic beer garden, the warm summer evenings – especially bank holidays – sees the place crammed with the local residents and their screaming kids”. So what does the reviewer recommend? That residents kindly make way on Bank Holidays so wanky, pub-tourists can sit outside overlooking the park (which the residents kindly pay for in council tax) discussing Voltaire and indulging in some spectacle-wearing, beard-growing circle jerk? I think not.

To end in the wise yet bastardised words of Mr Lennon; Let me take you down, ’cause I’m going to London Fields. Nothing is real and nothing to get hung about. London Fields forever.

London Fields Forever
