It’s been a week of reflection since I decided to break some unwritten rules of my London. Last Monday evening I: 1) Went to a gig on my own 2) Went to a gig on a Monday 3) Ventured further north than City Road without the backup of my home-boys. I found myself having a quiet pre-gig pint downstairs in the wonderful Lexington, highly entertained by their weekly Music Pub Quiz. Upstairs lay the draw for this timely and momentous occasion. I was about to see a band from L.A. make its debut outside America known as Local Natives.

Quite apt, as upon being left awe struck at their mesmerising performance, I am sticking my neck out to say they will soon become very timely and very momentous; words I fear Jools Holland will utter before announcing them on Later. Made up of members from popular Orange County band Cavil At Rest, this 5 piece utilise 1.5 drumkits, 0.75 keyboards, 3 guitars, 4 harmonic voices plus a broken cymbal that creates a live sound that has energy unbound that takes there agile and cascading recorded sound to another level. Nothing smacks of the usual folky bandwagon loveliness, there is blood, sweat and full on rock’n'roll all over the stage. Stand out tracks ‘Airplanes’ and ‘Sun Hands’ showcase everything I’m getting excited about. I don’t want to, but I keep thinking of comparing them to Arcade Fire meets Simon and Garfunkel, but in a good way.

Local Natives – Sun Hands

[See post to listen to audio]

Support for this outstanding, and apparently quite regular, Rockfeedback evening came from YourTwenties, a fresh and melodic pop band from Devon fronted by ex-Metronomy man Gabriel Stebbing. The very much deserve a praise worthy mention, especially for the much hyped track ‘Billionaire’

Introducing Crystal Fighters and their track “X-tatic Truth”. Expect to hear this remixed heavily all summer, which is testament to the fact that the original has so much worth pillaging.

Crystal Fighters are another act coming off the Kitsune label in Paris, who incidentally have brought out their Autumn/Winter range which is called “graduate” and is pretty preppy hot if you ask me, see below for evidence and here for further info.

Thanks to Kitsune for the image.

I really like this track, the plucky sitar-esque start reminds me of the sample used in the 90s dancefloor filler, ‘Heart of Asia’ by Watergate (the memory of which reminded me of Hi-Gate “Pitchin” which was a heavy late 90s track, watch it here). Then it sweeps into some classic spacey, existential vocals and then the big kick-in and associated rinse out – this track will do more dancefloor carvery than Freddy Kruger on Elm Street. Remixes to look out for are Benni Benassi and The Magistrates.

I’m just putting together a new Spotify playlist which should replace our old Project Playlist set up, considering that they appear to have been pulled down, boo hoo. In the interim, Drowned in Sound have put together a !100 songs of 2009! playlist, which is the sex. Get on it here.

Off to Oasis this evening, hopefully I can manage to pull this off…

Another day, another songstress; except every now and then there is always that one diamond protruding from the coal face of the current wonky pop scene. In my Irregular eyes it is undoubtedly the reverberating music that forms Ellie Goulding’s work.

After expecting her to blow up earlier in the year in the same wave that spat La Roux and Little Boots onto mainstream shores, we’re a bit perplexed why her endearingly twangy vocals and undoubtedly neat beats are not getting much airplay. Unlike her so-called peers, Ellie has remained cherished amoungst the indie blogger scene; especially for the way her lyrics and compositions lend themselves to notably unique synthy-based remixes. Her work along side the up and coming knob-twiddler Starsmith (under the moniker of Goldsmith) seems quite fresh in a time of copy and paste pop hits. Good beats, fresh bass, pure and simple. Tune of choice for me is Guns and Horses, although the remixes of Starryeyed are definitely growing on me. Enjoy.

With summer having made a strong start on the sunshine front, I thought it best to uncover a track for the summer to repay the good work so far.

Found this clip on Youtube of Tricky performing “Hell is round the Corner” at the Mercury awards in 1995 (the lyrics of which I’m a huge fan of and they can be found here). I’ve been delving back into Portishead, Leftfield, Massive Attack and, of course, Tricky of late and it’s been a musical odyssey I’d truly recommend. Just for added amusement, listen to the “critics” review of Tricky after his performance. I’ll give you a clue, 2 of them have seen a few disused warehouses in their time and 2 haven’t and I’ll give you another clue, the Marco Pierre-White lookalike certainly doesn’t seem down with trip hop or it’s associated trappings…

If, like Tricky, you want to get dressed up in Stüssy, I was perusing their new collection earlier and they have some killer stuff, especially in their deluxe range…check it here.

The night was a one-off (we think) pop up club in the Paramount bar on the 31st floor of the (pretty spectacular inside, pretty dirty outside) centrepoint building. You can probably imagine, but the views were out of this world. Witness:

And the obligatory 4:30 am video; sunrise was not a particularly welcome thing inside the club, though most of us did slacken the pace of dancing a little to have a look.

Get involved with the ETA scene, anyway; particularly strong tunes…the remix of Sister Nancy – Bam Bamat the start of the night blew my mind,

And Blackalicious’s Alphabet Aerobics getting dropped at approximately 6am could have been made for me…

You’ll also ge tthe chance to see international rugby stars consuming small mountains of controlled substances and, potentially, at least one of the Irregulars dancing like Suggs for 5 hours solid. Win!

All I can say about Chrome Hoof is watch the video below and enjoy, it’s like a Flash Gordon-inspired acid party. The merits of the French funk pushers at Ed Banger have adorned these meagre pages enough times already.

Thanks to 1234shoreditch.com for the photo of their scenester-fest of 2007.

25th July is the date and with early bird tickets still worth a peck at £15 (including entry to 10 afterparties – obviously all running concurrently so not as ideal as it sounds) – so what you waiting for?

With the Horrors and Final Fantasy both at Field Day this year, I might be going for the East London high-jinx hattrick of Lovebox, Field Day and 1234.
